For over 25 years, Buffalo Niagara Waterkeeper has been a community-based organization whose mission is to protect the water quantity and quality and connect people to the water. On a local scale, they accomplish this through action on the ground, including cleaning up pollution, restoring habitat for fish and wildlife and ensuring that the public has access to their waterways and parks/open spaces. Buffalo Niagara Waterkeeper focuses their work on the Buffalo River Watershed, Cayuga Creek, Niagara River, Outer Harbor, Scajaquada Creek and Tonawanda Creek.
Declared dead in the mid 1990’s, the Buffalo River has come a long way thanks to the efforts of organizations like Buffalo Niagara Waterkeeper. Water quality is sampled throughout the Buffalo and Niagara River watersheds on a monthly basis to supplement the testing done by government agencies. This information creates a baseline of water quality data so that the organization can monitor the health of its waters and the success of its efforts.
