Platis Gialos is one of the largest sandy beaches of the island and is the most popular choice of Greek visitors.
The beach of Platy Gialos receives awards every year from the FEE, with the blue flag of the European Union indicating its compliance with the strict criteria of the program (cleanliness, organization, swimming water quality, safety, life guard facilities, first aid, services, facilities, etc.)
In Platys Gialos there are plenty of accommodation with furnished apartments, rooms to let and hotels. There are also restaurants, grocery stores, tourist offices, cafés, and pottery workshops.
Platis Gialos is connected with asphalt road with the capital (Apollonia- 10 km) , the port (Kamares-15 km) and all the other villages of the island and can be reached with all the means of transport. There are regular buses to Platys Gialos in the high season from 7 am to 12 o’clock midnight. The road comes right behind the beach and leads to a square.
This gives the opportunity to the visitors to choose where to stop.
On the left side of the bay there is a fishing boat refuge that also provides services to yachts.
In the middle of the village, next to “Alexandros Vernikos” Square, there is a small open air theatre.
Also of interest is the church of Agia Sofia on the right hand side of the main road.
Local attractions include the White Tower, 1.5 km northeast of the beach, one of the 77 ancient beacon towers (‘fryktories’) of the island and the best preserved.
Many hiking trails start from the village, heading towards Fikiada, Vathi, and the other central village settlements.
Opposite the beach of Platy Gialos is the uninhabited islet of Kitriani, with its solitary building, the church of the same name, Panagia Kitriani, the oldest church of Sifnos (10th to 11th century).
