Kamares beach is big and sandy with sparkling clean waters.
It was awarded the Blue Flag of the European Union for the first time in 2002 and it is awarded the Flag every year since. It adheres to very strict criteria on Beach Organization, Cleanliness and Safety of Swimmers.
Arriving at the beach from the side of the port we find the information signs of the Blue Flag. There we can find out about the manager of the beach, the lifesaving crews, the recent results of the microbiological tests of the water, the location of first aid and lifesaving provisions, the showers, WC, disabled access, rubbish bins, recycling bins etc.
Continuing our walk on the beach to our right we will find the sand dunes. The sand dunes are the result of the action of the sea and the wind. They are sensitive and dynamic ecosystems hosting a plethora of plants and animals. These organisms are adapted to the hostile environment of the dunes. At the same time, the sand dunes protect the ground from the corrosive effect of the sea.
Along the beach there are showers, changing rooms, rubbish bins and signs informing of the services provided on the beach.
About halfway the length of the beach we find the coastal lake of Kamares which retains the characteristic vegetation of reeds, rushes, osiers, sand lilies, sun spurges, sea stocks, juniper trees, and glassworts. The area is especially important as it is a sample of a natural reserve (lake near the sea) and hosts an important fauna. During bird migration it offers shelter (station) to migratory birds. The fauna of the area includes hedgehogs, lizards, adders, blackbirds, kingfishers, common buzzards, falcons, owls, wagtails, crows, sparrows, sea gulls, starlings, herons, ducks, coots, ravens, turtles, egrets and in winter migratory birds.
