Fort Monroe treats visitors to pristine sandy beaches perfect for swimming, fishing and boating. It is also home to America's largest stone fort, the Casemate Museum, waterfront restaurants, athletic fields. camping and RV and travel park.

On November 1, 2011, President Barack Obama signed a proclamation to designate portions of Fort Monroe as a National Monument. This was the first time that President Obama exercised his authority under the Antiquities Act, a 1906 law to protect sites deemed to have natural, historical or scientific significance.

A beach is marked Green when the level of enterococci bacteria in the water is less than 104 units per 100 mL of water.

A beach is marked Red when the level of enterococci bacteria in the water is higher than 104 units per 100 mL of water.

A beach is marked Grey when there is no current or reliable monitoring information available.
