SOURCE INFORMATION

Canterbury Regional Council monitors water quality at popular swimming spots throughout the Canterbury region during summer. Water samples are collected weekly from around 100 recreational swimming sites from mid-November to February/March.

Freshwater sites are tested for E.coli levels and toxic algae blooms. Beaches with elevated levels of bacteria are tested more regularly.

The council issues an AMBER alert if a single sample level of E.coli are greater than 260 E. coli/100 mL of water. Signs will also be posted at beaches and until water levels return to a safe level.

Pulse Energy updates Swim Guide for the latest water quality information daily, Monday - Friday during the swimming season.

A beach has a GREEN current status when no single sample is greater than 260 E. coli/100 mL and has a rank of GREEN.

A beach has a RED current status in Swim Guide when samples exceed the water quality criteria of 260 E. coli/100 mL.

A beach is marked Grey in Swim Guide when there is no current or reliable monitoring information available.

A swim site is also marked RED if cyanobacteria (toxic algae) levels exceed 15,000 cells/ml in single sample OR more than 1.8mm³/litre.

Swimming is not recommended within 48 hours after a heavy rainfall or around stormwater outfalls and at stream mouths.
