About Newport Beach-The Wedge
Located at the far Southeast part of Newport Beach, a wicked wave known as “the Wedge” is a bodysurfing and bodyboarding mecca. The Wedge has been known to produce 25-foot waves on a strong south swell and is not for the novice. While the steep break creates hollow waves for bodysurfers, not many paddle out on surfboards here. Bodysurfers discovered the surf break in the ’30s and dubbed it “The Hook.” On a monstrous day it’s a huge spectator draw, with hundreds of people cheering as a handful of bodysurfers brave the freakish waves. Boards are not allowed at the Wedge from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., May 1 through Oct. 31. Parking in local neighborhoods. Lifeguard on duty.
Reminders: There is a 3-day rain advisory after each rain storm, use caution as bacteria levels can increase during this period. The County Environmental Health staff advises swimmers that levels of bacteria can rise significantly in ocean and bay waters adjacent to storm drains, creeks and rivers. Swimmers should avoid coastal waters impacted by discharging storm drains creeks and rivers, and beach users should avoid contact with any runoff on the beach during dry or wet weather conditions. As an extra precaution remain 500 ft away on either side from any outfalls.
