People come here to enjoy moments of pure pleasure: diving in the crystal-clear waters of the Atlantic Ocean, having a drink and feeling the sea breeze, enjoying the untamed ocean and the famous sunset, running along the promenade and cycling on the bike path. Here are some of the elected activities by local people and tourists that make the area of Foz an ex-libris of the city of Porto.
The bathing area of Foz spreads out between the street of Senhora da Luz (Lady of the Light), where once have been a chapel dedicated to the Mother of God, and the piers of Felgueiras and Norte, next to the Fort of St. João da Foz, organized into a set of five beaches (Luz, Ingleses, Ourigo, Carneiro and Pastoras). Tides reveal the rock masses that coexist in harmony with sheltered beaches of gentle slopes and fine sand. This bathing area has modern supporting equipment, good road access, public transport, car park and bike park.
From the piers of Felgueiras and Norte, where the river Douro meets the Atlantic Ocean, it is possible to follow two paths. Here begins the Geological Tour of Foz do Douro, where some of the oldest rocks in Portugal can be observed, along 2 km of coastline, in northerly direction to the beach of Castelo do Queijo. Heading south, the sea gives up its place to the serene waters of the River Douro and there is a privileged view of a riverine landscape of great beauty that extends to Ribeira do Porto and to the historic center of the city.
