Bacterial levels exceed safe health standards 300 feet of North Beach in front of the playground area (posted area reduced 1/17/2013). There are two Amtrak stations that are right on this beach. The beach is two miles long with Ole Hanson’s Beach Club at the northernmost end. Most of the beach access points require crossing railroad tracks, and most paths or stairways have limited on-street parking. Avenida Pico ends at Ole Hanson Beach Club and leads directly to North Beach. There is a metered parking lot, snack stands, body board rentals, beach wheelchairs, picnic areas, volleyball courts, swings, fire pits and grills, outdoor showers, wheelchair-accessible restrooms and lifeguard on duty. Avenida Esplanade at Paseo del Cristobal leads to a pedestrian railroad overpass and stairway; there are lifeguards, restrooms, showers, picnic facilities and metered parking available here. Surfing is allowed depending on season and the crowds (source: CA Coastal Commission). Reminders: There is a 3-day rain advisory after each rain storm, use caution as bacteria levels can increase during this period. The County Environmental Health staff advises swimmers that levels of bacteria can rise significantly in ocean and bay waters adjacent to storm drains, creeks and rivers. Swimmers should avoid coastal waters impacted by discharging storm drains creeks and rivers, and beach users should avoid contact with any runoff on the beach during dry or wet weather conditions. As an extra precaution remain 500 ft away on either side from any outfalls.
