The Missouri Confluence Waterkeeper routinely monitors local waterways as part of a comprehensive water quality monitoring initiative aimed at improving water quality in Missouri. Trained staff and interns collect samples at rivers and lakes commonly used for recreational purposes like swimming, paddling, and fishing. Water samples are collected on a weekly basis during the summer season, usually on Thursdays, and results are posted on Friday afternoons in time for your weekend adventures. Our Swim Guide monitoring program tests water for E.coli and total coliform. Test results are expressed as Most Probable Number (MPN) of E.coli CFU (colony forming units) per 100 milliliters. Missouri Confluence Waterkeeper uses the 2012 Beach Action Value (BAV) recommended by the EPA (235 E.coli/100 mL). A beach is marked GREEN when sample results are under 190 E.coli colonies per 100 milliliters of water, the Missouri Department of Health’s Swim Beach advisory level. A beach is marked RED when the results are equal to or above 190 E.coli per 100 ML water. A beach is marked GREY when there are no current results or there is no available information. A beach marked Special Status indicates a special circumstance such as flooding. Results will be available on the Missouri Confluence Waterkeeper website and social media, or by calling the Missouri Confluence Waterkeeper at 314-884-1473. Note: The 2012 Beach Action Value (BAV) recommended by the EPA (235 E.coli per 100 mL) is based on an estimated illness rate of 36 individuals per 1,000. Disclaimer: The information contained on this website is for informational purposes only. All sites monitored are natural water bodies and contaminants are present from a wide variety of sources. Local conditions fluctuate, sometimes rapidly, especially after rainfall events. The results displayed above are only representative of the exact time, date and location at which the sample was taken and do not represent the water quality between sampling events or at other locations nearby on the river. Users of this data should not assume that a “low” E.coli level means that it is necessarily safe or risk-free to make contact with the water. E.coli is not the only contaminant of concern for recreational users, and is used merely as an indicator of potential fecal contamination. Missouri Confluence Waterkeeper, their directors, employees, and agents can provide no guarantee of water safety and, as such, the user assumes all risks associated with the use of this data and swimming in Missouri’s waterways.
