Cabin John Local Park

The Cabin John Creek at the Cabin John Local Park is located in the beautiful Cabin John Stream Valley Park along the bike and Ride-On bus route on Macarthur Blvd. The park has parking yet no facilities (a porta john in the summer) and is home to the lovely 10 mile Cabin John Trail along the creek. The trail and creek is wonderful for kid play, dogs (on leash), hiking, mountain biking, and fishing. Lots of wildlife has been spotted here, including owls, foxes, box turtles, coyote, deer and various raptors and songbirds. Alternate parking and trail access is on Tuckerman Lane. There are several creekside access points along this stretch of the trail. The park is on MacArthur Blvd at the historic Cabin John Bridge (Union Arch Bridge), a stone arch bridge built during the civil war. It also contains the aqueduct carrying water to Washington DC from the Potomac River. The test site is at the creekside picnic table which is about 1/4 mile down the Cabin John Trail to the first path down to the creek . The creek has a small pebble beach in this spot and a deep pool under the rock cliff. Water is sampled for E. coli at all sites. Sampling occurs every other week on Wednesday morning from the June to mid-September. Results are available 48 hours after samples are collected.
