In Skyros, the Equus Cabalus Skyriano horse, one of the rare horse breeds in the world, has been living for centuries, free on Mount Kochylas. Skyros Island and islets hold the largest colony of the world's Falcon eleanorae, a migratory hawk that is a globally threatened species.

Skyros island is hosting a variety of species and ecosystems, some of which are unique to the Aegean region and with having easy access and approach to most of them, is an ideal location for the implementation of Environmental Education and the understanding of the pertinent environmental issues.
