Heinz Beach is located in the charming and quaint area of Chautauqua county on the freshwater of Chautauqua Lake. Heinz Beach is a public swimming beach run by the Chautauqua Institution, located on the southern end of the camp. This beach is open with lifeguards on duty Monday- Saturday from 10:00am- 6:00pm, Sunday from 12:00pm- 6:00pm and offers a calm swimming area with a sandy bottom. The Chautauqua Institution is a national historic landmark founded in 1874 and offers many summer programs such as theater, dance performances and concerts. There are many amenities offered along the Chautauqua shoreline such as boat launches, marinas and bicycle and walking trails. It is important to note that adults entering Heinz beach are required to pay a fee at the gate. Chautauqua Lake has calmer waters and drains in the south into Chadakoin River continuing east into the Conewango Creek. Chautauqua can be translated into a few different meanings, one of which is “Bag tied in the middle” referring to the narrow portion of the water between shorelines half-way down the lake.
