The Virginia Department of Health (DOH) monitors water quality at beaches in this region from May to September. Water samples are collected and results posted weekly. Results are posted on the DOH website. Assateague Coastal Trust monitors the latest sample results posted by the Virginia DOH and publishes the results to Swim Guide each week. A beach is marked Green when the level of enterococcus bacteria in the water is less than 104 units per 100 mL of water. A beach is marked Red when the level of enterococcus bacteria in the water is higher than 104 units per 100 mL of water. A beach is marked Grey when there is no current or reliable monitoring information available.
