Tier I beaches are tested 2-3 times per week and Tier II beaches are tested at least once per week, with more frequent testing at beaches where water quality changes often. Tier II beaches are retested if a sample exceeds water quality standards. Tier 1 beaches are closed after one sample exceedance and retested daily until reopened. The samples are taken at knee depth, near known and potential pollution sources and from the most popular swimming spots. Tier III beaches are tested once a month. A marine beach is marked Green when there are equal to or less than 104 units of Enterococci per 100 ml of water and when the 30-day geometric mean contains 35 units / 100ml of water or less. A freshwater beach is marked Green when single sample results are 235 units of E.coli per 100 ml of water or less and when the 30-day geometric mean contains less than 126 units / 100ml of water or less. A marine beach is marked Red when a single sample exceeds 104 units of Enterococci per 100 ml of water or when the 30-day geometric mean contains more than 35 units / 100ml of water. A freshwater beach is marked Red when a single sample exceeds 235 units of E.coli per 100 ml of water or when the 30-day geometric mean contains more than 126 units / 100ml of water.
