New York Beaches are monitored by the New York City Office of Public Health Engineering. Samples are collected at least once a week from late May (Memorial Day) to early September (Labor Day). A beach is marked Green when the geometric mean of 5 samples contain less than 35 enterococci/ 100ml of water and the single sample result is less than 104 enterococci/100ml. A beach is marked Red when the geometric mean of 5 samples contain more than 35 units enterococci/ 100ml of water or the single sample result is equal to or above 104 enterococci/100ml. A beach is marked Grey when there is no current or reliable monitoring information available. Swim Guide's updates New York beaches with information from the NYC.gov Health website for beach water quality. You may also get water quality information from 311.
