MountainTrue West

Based in Murphy, North Carolina, the MountainTrue West team works to monitor and protect the quality of our region’s waterways through dedicated volunteers, community engagement, and engagement with local, state, and federal government agencies. In 2019, the Hiwassee River Watershed Coalition merged with MountainTrue to become its Western Regional Office. MountainTrue’s Western Regional Office partners with and serves communities in Western North Carolina’s Cherokee, Clay, Graham, Haywood, Jackson, Macon, and Swain counties, as well as Town and Union counties in North Georgia.

From May to September, MountainTrue West staff, interns, and volunteers collect weekly water samples from the Hiwassee and Nottely river watersheds. We process and analyze each sample and post the results to the Swim Guide platform before the weekend so you know where it’s safe to swim.
