North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality- Division of Water Resources

The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality is responsible for the protection of North Carolina’s environmental resources through science-based stewardship.  Within the Department, the Division of Water Resources oversees environmental protection and quality of the State’s surface, ground and drinking water. Recently, the Division received funding to increase its scope to include a new Recreational Monitoring program in Western North Carolina overseen by the Asheville Regional Office’s Water Quality Regional Operations Section. This program seeks to improve upon recreational monitoring strategies with the aid of local, State, and National partnerships. Our most recent collaborations with our partners have helped create a pilot E.coli estimator at a highly recreated section of the French Broad within Asheville to better inform recreators of potential risks based on the type of activity. The program aims to expand recreational monitoring beyond the French Broad in the coming years with the aid of local partners and utilize similar models in recreational areas where appropriate.
