YC & W Community Wharf is sampled Bi-Weekly from June 15th to September 26th.
The Jemseg Grand Lake Watershed Association is a group of dedicated volunteers who monitor water quality at beaches in the Jemseg Grand Lake Watershed from June to September. The watershed is monitored for E. coli, various chemicals, nutrients, and metals. Water quality samples are collected biweekly at the Y.C. & W. Community Wharf and monthly at the other beaches. Results are discussed annually in our water quality report, which is posted on our website and publicized through our social media channels. The natural beauty, history, water activities and unique flora, fauna and wetlands of our watershed have attracted generations of summer and permanent residents, starting with the First Nations Wəlastəkwewiyik, people of the Wəlastəkw (Saint John River). Wəlastəkw is the Maliseet name meaning “beautiful river”. A beach is marked Green when E. coli levels are below the Health Canada Guideline for recreation of 235 MPN/100mL. A beach is marked Red when E. coli levels are above the Health Canada Guideline for recreation of 235 MPN/100mL. A beach is marked Grey when the beach is not being monitored in the current season.
