Located south of Rabat, in the municipality of Harhoura, Smugglers’ Beach (Plage des Contrebandiers) is one of the most popular seaside destinations in the region. Easily accessible from the coastal road leading to Casablanca, this fine sandy beach is appreciated for its family-friendly atmosphere and facilities adapted to summer visitors.
The beach’s evocative name refers to its historical past, when smugglers used its discreet coves for their activities. Today, it offers an ideal setting for swimming, beach games and seaside walks. Nearby, the Smugglers’ Cave, located about 250 meters southeast of the bay, is a site of geological and historical interest, bearing witness to human occupation since prehistoric times. Visitors can also enjoy nearby amenities such as cafés, restaurants and accommodation, including holiday rentals offering stunning views of the ocean.
In view of the high number of visitors, the municipality has demonstrated strong commitment to this site, working closely with its partners to strengthen beach management through improved infrastructure and equipment, enhanced information and signage, and the implementation of environmental education and awareness-raising activities. A Beach Management and Use Plan has been developed, with dedicated human and financial resources allocated for its implementation, in accordance with the criteria of the Blue Flag label, with the aim of ensuring high-quality services while preserving the coastal environment.
