COVID-19

Keep your distance from other people.

Practicing social distancing is essential right now. Follow the advice of the health experts. If your community has asked that you remain indoors and away from others, do so. Heading to the beach should only be considered an option if social distancing practices can be followed. Spending a day in any crowded place is the worst thing we can do for our most vulnerable right now and will counter the efforts to curb the virus’ spread.

Hwy 193 Bridge, Fowl River is sampled weekly from April 1st from September 30th.

Source Information

**We are currently issuing a special warning for Perdido Bay sites due to the presence of a lyngbya algal bloom. We do not recommend swimming if you are seeing the bloom in your water. The algae itself can cause skin irritation and potentially stomach illness. The bloom can also cause increased levels of fecal indicator bacteria such as E. coli and Enterococcus. At this time we have no evidence there has been a sewage spill or other release of human fecal matter but we continue to monitor the issue. This special warning is separate from the usual ADEM testing at these sites.

Please email ckistler@mobilebaykeeper.org or mdiskin@mobilebaykeeper.org if you have questions.**

This beach information is maintained by Mobile Baykeeper, using data from the Alabama Department of Environmental Management and Alabama Department of Public Health. Depending on the site, samples are collected twice per week, once per week or once every other week during the swimming season (May through September) and once per month during the cooler months.

Water samples are analyzed for the indicator bacteria Enterococci. Beaches will be marked as unsafe (red) for swimming when sample results show more than 104 Enterococci colonies per 100 ml of water and will be marked as safe (green) when Enterococci colonies are below 104 colonies per 100 ml of water. A grey status indicates a lack of current or reliable data for a particular site.
