Ben T. Davis was a Tampa businessman who owned a local dredging company and commissioned the causeway to link Tampa and Clearwater. Construction began in 1927 and was completed in 1934. Seized as part of the war effort in 1944, the causeway was transferred to the State and later renamed for U.S. Representative Courtney W. Campbell, a Clearwater resident and supporter for the upkeep and beautification of the structure. The Causeway became an official Scenic Highway in 2005. The City of Tampa operates a public beach at the east end that provides access along Old Tampa Bay. Close to Downtown, the area hosts volleyball games, concessions, picnic shelters and grills. Lifeguards are on duty from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Other onsite amenities include restrooms and metered parking. For more information, please call 813-758-8286. Fishing regulations/licenses may apply.
Keep your distance from other people.
Practicing social distancing is still essential. Only go to the beach if you are able to keep 6 feet or 2 meters away from others. Follow the instructions provided by your local health authorities. If your community has asked that you remain indoors and away from others, do so. Spending a day in any crowded place is the worst thing we can do for our most vulnerable right now and will counter our efforts to curb the virus’s spread.
