Isaac Hudson moved to the Gulf of Mexico’s coast in 1878 and established a post office. The area struggled after the timber industry slowed and returned to relying on fishing for its livelihood. In the 1950’s, developers contracted the Army Corp of Engineers to construct a series of intracoastal canals, providing alluring waterfront property in everyone’s backyard. Walt Disney found it so attractive that he considered the location for his park. The Hudson Community promotes a “do-it-yourself” attitude. Many of its features resulted from residents initiating projects. The beach is one of those projects, resulting from the community’s desire for a social gathering venue. Pasco County acquired the 6-acre park and operates the facility with the new name, Robert J. Strickland Memorial Park. The grounds offer over 200 linear feet for a designated swimming zone, restaurants, observation decks, boardwalks, boat launches, a full marina, fishing access and picnic shelters. Charter fishing, canoeing/kayaking and wildlife observations are popular activities. Operating hours are dawn til dusk, 7 days a week. Access and parking fees apply. Additional onsite amenities include a playground and restroom. Fishing regulations/licenses may apply. For more information about access/use, please call 727-861-3010.
Keep your distance from other people.
Practicing social distancing is still essential. Only go to the beach if you are able to keep 6 feet or 2 meters away from others. Follow the instructions provided by your local health authorities. If your community has asked that you remain indoors and away from others, do so. Spending a day in any crowded place is the worst thing we can do for our most vulnerable right now and will counter our efforts to curb the virus’s spread.
