The Oakwood/41st Street Beach is located in Chicago's south end. It is one of Chicago's newest beaches, constructed in the late 1990s in an effort to prevent erosion of the shoreline. Open 11 am to 7 pm, Oakwood offers food stands, restrooms, and a pay-and-display parking lot for beach-goers. Enjoy this sandy beach for castle building, swimming, or distance swimming parallel to the shoreline. Be sure to visit the 41st Street beach house when you are here. The building includes a number of sustainable design features, including a system for harvesting rainwater. The beach has long distance swimming running parallel to the shore, there is a wheel chair accessible path to the beach and public washrooms on site. There is also a pay-and-display parking lot on site.
Keep your distance from other people.
Practicing social distancing is still essential. Only go to the beach if you are able to keep 6 feet or 2 meters away from others. Follow the instructions provided by your local health authorities. If your community has asked that you remain indoors and away from others, do so. Spending a day in any crowded place is the worst thing we can do for our most vulnerable right now and will counter our efforts to curb the virus’s spread.
