Valley Grove Beach

Northport, New York

This Northport beach is one of two waterfront areas located in Eaton’s Neck, the second being Price’s Bend. Valley Grove is often closed to swimming as it houses a storm drain pipe and has had increased levels of bacteria following heavier rainfalls. The Property Owners of Eaton’s Neck Beach are working with Suffolk County to moderate this. This is a Tier I Beach.

COVID-19

Keep your distance from other people.

Practicing social distancing is still essential. Only go to the beach if you are able to keep 6 feet or 2 meters away from others. Follow the instructions provided by your local health authorities. If your community has asked that you remain indoors and away from others, do so. Spending a day in any crowded place is the worst thing we can do for our most vulnerable right now and will counter our efforts to curb the virus’s spread.

Suffolk County Health Services tests the water quality from Mid May - Mid Sept. Tier I beaches are tested 2-3 times per week and Tier II beaches are tested at least once per week, with more frequent testing at beaches where water quality changes often. Tier II beaches are retested if a sample exceeds water quality standards. Tier 1 beaches are closed after one sample exceedance and retested daily until reopened.

The samples are taken at knee depth, near known and potential pollution sources and from the most popular swimming spots.

Tier III beaches are tested once a month.

A marine beach is marked Green when there are equal to or less than 104 units of Enterococci per 100 ml of water and when the 30-day geometric mean contains 35 units / 100ml of water or less.

A freshwater beach is marked Green when single sample results are 235 units of E.coli per 100 ml of water or less and when the 30-day geometric mean contains less than 126 units / 100ml of water or less.

A marine beach is marked Red when a single sample exceeds 104 units of Enterococci per 100 ml of water or when the 30-day geometric mean contains more than 35 units / 100ml of water.
