Suffolk County Health Services tests the water quality from a month prior to Memorial Day until Labor Day. Tier I beaches are tested 2-3 times per week and Tier II beaches are tested at least once per week, with more frequent testing at beaches where water quality changes often. Tier I and Tier II beaches are retested if a sample exceeds water quality standards. Additional samples are taken from Tier I and Tier II beaches prone to water quality issues from stormwater runoff after heavy rainfall. Several samples are taken from Tier I and Tier II beaches. The samples are taken at knee depth, near known and potential pollution sources and from the most popular swimming spots.
Tier III beaches are tested once a month from June 15 to Labour Day.
