Tolchester Estates Beach

Chestertown, Maryland
Managed by The Swim Guide

Tolchester Estate was established in 1920 on Chesapeake Bay's Eastern Shore near Tolchester Beach, a once hugely popular steamboat destination point. The beach is located directly on the bay and has been a popular swimming spot for generations. There used to be an amusement park at Tolchester Beach, inspired by Coney Island, that included a racetrack, a grandstand, a dance pavilion, and many rides, as well as a picnic area and a sandy bathing beach. However, after the end of the steamboat era the site deteriorated as did the Tolchester Estates. In recent years Tolchester Estate has become popular again as a cottage spot on the bay. There is a popular marina nearby where many boaters stop as they cruise the bay.

MONITORING FREQUENCY

Tolchester Estates Beach is sampled monthly from May 26th to September 1st

SOURCE INFORMATION

The Kent County Health Department tests beaches weekly from Memorial Day to Labor Day for Enterococcus bacteria. The Kent County Health Department alerts the public to any hazards. Samples are collected on Monday and results are usually available Tuesday after 3pm.

For bacteria in brackish or salt water, to be considered “clean” the average level of enterococci must be under 36 colonies per 100 ml of water. More than that triggers an advisory. The county issues automatic advisories after heavy rainfalls if they are unable to test water quality.

Beach advisories can be checked confirmed by calling Kent County's hotline 410-778-1361

Maryland Healthy Beaches notification system has partnered with Google Earth to send updates. However, Swim Guide prefers to contact the Health Department directly as we are unable to determine the monitoring schedule Google Earth uses.
