Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management monitors water quality at all licensed beaches in Rhode Island. Water samples are collected from Memorial Day weekend to Labour Day weekend. The monitoring schedule follows a tiered monitoring plan. Tier I beaches are sampled at least weekly. Tier II beaches are samples monthly.

Tier III beaches are sampled twice per season. HEALTH may increase the sampling at a site if they find there is a need for more frequent testing, for example if there are known or potential sources of pollution or if the current sampling schedule does not sufficiently protect the public’s health.

Results are posted daily to the website, however the hotline has the most up to date information. Swim Guide checks for the latest information daily in the late afternoon to ensure the most up to date information.

A beach is marked Green samples are lower than 104 colony forming units (cfu) Enterococci per 100 ml of water.

A saltwater beach is marked Red when a single sample exceeds 104 colony forming units (cfu) Enterococci per 100 ml of water.

A beach is marked Grey when no current or reliable information is available.

Please note that Rhode Island banned smoking on all public beaches.
