The Department of Environmental Protection monitors water quality at beaches in this region from mid-May to mid-September. Water samples are collected weekly on Mondays and posted Tuesday afternoon to the Cooperative Coastal Monitoring Program website or on the beach hotline: 1-800-648-SAND. Swim Guide checks for the latest information daily, Monday through Friday throughout the monitoring season. A beach is marked Green when water samples show enterococci counts below 104 units/ 100 ml of water. A beach is marked Red when two consecutive samples have enterococci counts above 104 units/ 100 ml of water or when the state issues an advisory due to other environmental concerns such as debris, algae blooms and sewage problems. A beach is marked Grey when reliable or up-to-date information is not available.
