Attawan Beach is a private beach and fishing pier open to homeowners of the Attawan Beach Community. There are life guards on duty during the monitoring season. The population of the Niantic Community also known as East Lyme doubles in the summer months as this area is well known for it's beaches, sports fishing, marinas and boardwalk.

Ledge Light Health District monitors water quality at beaches in this region from mid-May to mid-September. Water samples are collected at weekly from different bathing areas. Advisories are posted to the health district website.

A beach is marked Green when bacteria counts are below 104 units / 100ml of marine water or 235 / 100ml of fresh water,

A beach is marked Red when two consecutive samples exceed 104 bacteria units / 100ml of marine water or 235 / 100ml of fresh water

A beach is marked Grey when there is no recent or reliable information available.
