The N.C. Recreational Water Quality Program's staff monitor over 200 locations in North Carolina. Monitoring locations are divided into three "tiers". The more popular a beach is, the more strict the water quality standard will be. This monitoring location is in the Tier 3 category. Tier 3 locations are used primarily for fishing and boating.

Visitors are unlikely to have full body contact unless there is a special event, such as a triathlon. Samples are collected bi-weekly from April - October and monthly from November - March.

Tier 3 locations will be listed as "Green" when there is less than 500 enterococci per 100mL of water in two consecutive single samples. When water quality results fail to meet this standard, Swim Guide will show these beaches as "Red". Weekly sampling continues until enterococci counts are below 500 / 100 ml of water.

Recreational fishing permits are required for people over the age of 16 in North Carolina.

Swim Guide checks water quality results daily April - October.
