Waipu Cove is known as one of New Zealand's best-patrolled surfing and boogie boarding beaches. Piroa Falls is 10 minutes away through a beautiful gorge. There are more swimming holes here if the beach is too crowded or the waves are too big. The cove connects to 5 major walkways close by and this sandy beachfront is perfect for strolling during low tide.
The Brynderwyn Walkway connects advanced, fit trampers to Mangawahai-Langs Beach in about 5 hours. The Ruakaka Estuary Walk is much easier to complete for those wanting a more leisurely walk. Start at the Waipu Surf Club at low tide and walk to the mouth of the river and through the reserve. The Mangawhai Surf Club is a path at the top of the hill, providing a beautiful vantage point of Waipu's cove. The Mangawhai Cliff Walk also begins at the surf club. The Robert Hastie Walkway begins on the road to Langs Beach and provides views of Marsden Point Oil Refinery, New Zealand's only oil refinery.
All of the walks provide excellent tramping, swimming, picnicking and exploring. Please make sure to stay on designated walkways as to not disrupt natural habitat.
Keep your distance from other people.
Practicing social distancing is still essential. Only go to the beach if you are able to keep 6 feet or 2 meters away from others. Follow the instructions provided by your local health authorities. If your community has asked that you remain indoors and away from others, do so. Spending a day in any crowded place is the worst thing we can do for our most vulnerable right now and will counter our efforts to curb the virus’s spread.
