The upper section of the Kaituna River provides some of the best white-water rafting and kayaking experiences in the world and has been used extensively since the 1990's for recreational water sports. In the 1970's local iwi objected to the discharge of sewage into the river. They filed a claim with the Waitangi Tribunal and in 1990 the Rotarua Land Treatment Scheme upgraded it's treatment facilities to remove 80% of the nitrogen and phosphorus from the effluent.
Keep your distance from other people.
Practicing social distancing is essential right now. Follow the advice of the health experts. If your community has asked that you remain indoors and away from others, do so. Heading to the beach should only be considered an option if social distancing practices can be followed. Spending a day in any crowded place is the worst thing we can do for our most vulnerable right now and will counter the efforts to curb the virus’ spread.
