Hampden is a small rural settlement with an extremely small population (close to 300 in 2004). This ocean beach rarely gets crowded. The beach is used primarily for swimming, and kayaking but the Katiki straight is known for providing good surf and trout fishing. The Moeraki Boulders are a few km south of the beach along the coast. These unusually large and almost perfectly spherically shaped boulders separate Hampden from Moeraki.
Since 2007, the Hampden Energy Forum has looked at ways for the town to cut back on its dependency on fossil fuels. Over 1/3rd of the community is involved in the planning of processes such as self-sufficient gardening, waste reduction, alternative electricity supply and wireless internet connection.
Keep your distance from other people.
Practicing social distancing is essential right now. Follow the advice of the health experts. If your community has asked that you remain indoors and away from others, do so. Heading to the beach should only be considered an option if social distancing practices can be followed. Spending a day in any crowded place is the worst thing we can do for our most vulnerable right now and will counter the efforts to curb the virus’ spread.
