Manawatu River Estuary provides one of the most diverse selections of bird habitat at any one place in New Zealand. In 2005 the estuary received Ramsar status, an inter-government treaty on the conservation of wetlands.
This popular recreational area is found in the Foxton Beach township, 5km west of Foxton. This spot is at the boating ramp, and not so often used for swimming, as the beach is further downstream, but more for boating (sailing and power boats), jet skiing and fishing. Nearby are parks and reserves, and a bird sanctuary in the Manawat? River estuary.
Keep your distance from other people.
Practicing social distancing is still essential. Only go to the beach if you are able to keep 6 feet or 2 meters away from others. Follow the instructions provided by your local health authorities. If your community has asked that you remain indoors and away from others, do so. Spending a day in any crowded place is the worst thing we can do for our most vulnerable right now and will counter our efforts to curb the virus’s spread.
