Pohara Beach is a 10 minute drive north-east of Takaka and is bordered by Pohara Beach Holiday Park for part of its 3.5km length. The main recreational use is swimming and boating. Due to the shallow-gradient of the beach and high tidal range the beach is best in the 3-4 hours around high tide. Otherwise it is a long walk to the water. At the peak Christmas-New Year period the beach has 200-600 visitors a day.
