Easily found on the esplanade of Kaikoruka Township, this small beach is fairly rocky but with a generous cover of shade on sunnier days. The coastline of Kaikoura is often sought out by tourists as a whale-watching destination, and communities of seals have been known to frolic close to shore. Parking, public toilets, changing sheds, and a children’s playground are available on the beach itself, and other amenities are readily available in the township proper.
A sloping sandy beach at the southern end of Kaikoura township. The bay is likely to have become shallower due to the uplift of seabed during the Kaikoura Earthquake. Plenty of parking along the coast. Grassed area above the beach with a few picnic tables. On the eastern end of the bay is a playground and swimming pool with public toilets. Monitored weekly between November-March by Environment Canterbury.
Keep your distance from other people.
Practicing social distancing is still essential. Only go to the beach if you are able to keep 6 feet or 2 meters away from others. Follow the instructions provided by your local health authorities. If your community has asked that you remain indoors and away from others, do so. Spending a day in any crowded place is the worst thing we can do for our most vulnerable right now and will counter our efforts to curb the virus’s spread.
