A hill-fed river in the township of Ashburton, this site is downstream of the north and south branch confluence. The river is best accessed on the inland side of SH1 from either end of the SH1 bridge. A typical braided river, this site consists of a gravel riverbed and numerous channels over a wide area. The river can be very swift and is home to many nesting endangered birds in the summer months. There are many recreational opportunities for cycling and walking along the river.
This site is monitored weekly between November-March by Environment Canterbury.
Keep your distance from other people.
Practicing social distancing is still essential. Only go to the beach if you are able to keep 6 feet or 2 meters away from others. Follow the instructions provided by your local health authorities. If your community has asked that you remain indoors and away from others, do so. Spending a day in any crowded place is the worst thing we can do for our most vulnerable right now and will counter our efforts to curb the virus’s spread.
