About 20 miles from downtown Portland, Walton Beach on Sauvie Island is a family-friendly beach on the Columbia River. This long sandy beach is popular with sunbathers and swimmers, and great for building sand castles or flying a kite on a windy day. You'll need a permit to park, which you can purchase at the Reeder Beach County Store. Find ample parking on the left of Reeder Road and then climb one of the staircases on the right to cross over the dunes and access the beach. This is a great beach for kids, but be aware that it is not uncommon to see off-leash dogs and the shoreline can drop off suddenly in places.
Columbia Riverkeeper volunteers monitor water quality at this beach from June-September.
Keep your distance from other people.
Practicing social distancing is still essential. Only go to the beach if you are able to keep 6 feet or 2 meters away from others. Follow the instructions provided by your local health authorities. If your community has asked that you remain indoors and away from others, do so. Spending a day in any crowded place is the worst thing we can do for our most vulnerable right now and will counter our efforts to curb the virus’s spread.
