High Island

Edgewater, Maryland

High Island is now submerged owing to excessive boat wakes, storm surge, sea-level rise and overuse by boaters coming ashore and trampling the plant life. It is now just a mud bank where boaters frequently run aground. It is currently the site of an oyster aquaculture bed.

Nearby Flat Island is approaching the same fate. The West & Rhode Riverkeeper is working with the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center to keep it from fading away. Please do not come on shore above the high-tide line. Do not let your guests or your pets use the woods as a toilet. Please don't love it to death like High Island.

The West & Rhode Riverkeeper citizen-scientist volunteers sample swimming locations every Wednesday from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Samples results are generally reported on Thursdays and Swim Guide is updated as soon as possible to reflect the latest results.

Samples are measured for Entroccoci bacteria, which serve as an indicator bacteria for pathogens in the water. Analysis is performed by Anne Arundel Community College using the membrane filtration method (see http://water.epa.gov/scitech/methods/cwa/bioindicators/upload/method_1600.pdf).

The Environmental Protection Agency has set a threshold of 104 colony forming units per 100 milliliters (cfu/100ml) as the single test limit for weekly testing.

Samples recording less than 104 cfu/100ml are therefore green, as having met water quality criteria.

Samples recording 104 cfu/100ml or greater are given a red, as having failed to meet water quality criteria and there is an increased risk of illness.

Anne Arundel County Department of Health also advises that after a rainfall, all Anne Arundel County beaches are under a no swimming/no direct water contact advisory for 48 hours due to predicted elevated bacteria levels from rainwater runoff and increased health risks.
