Cheat River at Cheat River Festival Site

Albright, West Virginia
Mis à jour par Friends of the Cheat

The Cheat River Festival Site is a popular put-in point for paddling the Cheat Canyon which hosts 9.5 miles of III-IV rapids through the wilderness to the take-out at the Jenkinsburg Bridge. The site is also home to the annual Cheat River Festival (www.cheatfest.org) on the first weekend in May.

The parking area is owned and maintained by Friends of the Cheat. From WV-26, turn onto Beach Run Road, and drive through Teter's Campground. A vault-style toilet was installed on-site in 2017, however running water is not available.

Our monitoring location is located just upstream of the carry-in boat launch upstream of Muddy Creek.

Check out the American Whitewater page for more information on paddling The Cheat Canyon. http://www.americanwhitewater.org/content/River/detail/id/2347

Note: this is not a designated swimming area. Swim at your own risk.

Sites are monitored for E. coli and total coliform as well as temperature, pH, and conductivity.

Bacteriological samples are analyzed using the IDEXX Quanti-Tray/2000 method through a partnership between Friends of the Cheat, Dr. Dorothy Vesper's Lab, and the Institute of Water Security and Science at West Virginia University. Funds to purchase the IDEXX system were provided by The Appalachian Freshwater Initiative, supported by the National Science Foundation under Award Number 1458952.

Samples are collected throughout the year. Water is monitored twice per month during peak river recreation months (April – September) and once per month during the off season (October – March).
Samples are generally collected on Wednesdays and results are posted on Fridays.

A beach is Green when E.coli is less than 410 CFU/100 mL.
A beach is Red when E.coli is equal to or more than 410 CFU/100 mL
