COVID-19

Keep your distance from other people.

Practicing social distancing is essential right now. Follow the advice of the health experts. If your community has asked that you remain indoors and away from others, do so. Heading to the beach should only be considered an option if social distancing practices can be followed. Spending a day in any crowded place is the worst thing we can do for our most vulnerable right now and will counter the efforts to curb the virus’ spread.

Sound Rivers’ Neuse and Pamlico-Tar Riverkeepers work with interns and volunteers to monitor water quality sites in the Neuse and Tar-Pamlico watersheds. Our sites are generally sampled weekly from June 1st through August 31st. Sites are monitored for E. coli (in freshwater) and enterococci in salt water.

Sound Rivers uses the EPA water quality criteria for contact recreation when testing for E coli., and the North Carolina water quality criteria for contact recreation when testing for Enterococcus. Healthy waters are less than 235 MPN/100 mL for E. coli in freshwater and enterococci less than 104 MPN/100 mL in salt water.

Sites are marked green when the last sample was below the criteria.

Sites are marked red when the last sample was above the criteria.

Sites are marked grey when there are no current results or there is no available information.

The results of our monitoring are posted to swim guide’s website and app as soon as lab results are available. You can find further information about Sound Rivers and our monitoring programs at http://soundrivers.org.
