Surfrider Foundation – Broward Chapter

Surfrider Foundation’s Blue Water Task Force (BWTF) is a volunteer-run community science initiative and water quality monitoring program. Surfrider Broward monitors popular ocean and Intracoastal beaches year-round in order to protect public health. This program is set up to complement the water quality information provided by the Florida Healthy Beaches Program via the Florida Department of Health in Broward County.

The Blue Water Task Force tests both marine and freshwater sites monthly for enterococcus, a fecal bacteria that helps indicate fecal pollution from animal or human sources. Broward County Blue Water Task Force water quality results and data are compared to criteria set by the Florida Department of Health. When results are low, marked green, the enterococcus values are between <10 and 70 MPN/ 100mL enterococcus. When results are high, marked red, values are above the 70 MPN enterococcus /100mL sample threshold.

All data are hosted on the Blue Water Task Force public database, bwtf.surfrider.org, and are shared on the chapter-level through social media and local press releases. Any additional questions can be forwarded to bwtf@broward.surfrider.org.
