Millington Waterfront Park

Millington, Maryland
Managed by ShoreRivers

Millington Waterfront Park is a great place for those who want to explore the Upper Chester River. There is a small dock for launching kayaks that is only accessible during high tide and a gravel walkway that can also be used for launching at any tide. Paddlers can head upstream through a forested cover and reach the headwaters of the Chester or paddle downstream to reach wider parts of the river. Paddlers are encouraged to come during high tide as the river is very narrow and shallow at this point. The park has a small trail loop that is great for bird watching. There is a small picnic area under the shade of some trees. Powerboats can not be launched from this site. Swimming is not allowed. A gravel parking lot is available with a portable toilet.

Monitoring Frequency

Millington Waterfront Park is sampled weekly from May 25th to August 31st.

Source Information

ShoreRivers and the Chester Riverkeeper sample locations weekly on Thursdays from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Samples results are generally reported on Fridays and Swim Guide is updated as soon as possible to reflect the latest results.

Samples are measured for Entroccoci bacteria, which serve as an indicator bacteria for pathogens in the water. Analysis is performed by ShoreRivers' technical staff using the IDEXX Enterolert procedure.

The Environmental Protection Agency has set a threshold of 104 colony forming units per 100 milliliters (cfu/100ml) as the single test limit for weekly testing. Samples recording less than 104 cfu/100ml are therefore considered acceptable levels for swimming and water contact. Samples recording 104 cfu/100ml or greater are considered unacceptable for swimming and water contact due to the increased risk of illness. It is advised that after a rainfall, all Chester River beaches are under a no swimming/no direct water contact advisory for 48 hours due to predicted elevated bacteria levels from rainwater runoff and increased health risks. ShoreRivers' mission is to protect and restore Eastern Shore waterways through science-based advocacy, restoration, and education.
