At the junction of Four Mile Run and the Potomac, Daingerfield Island hosts sailing, fishing, and field sports, along with a popular restaurant. The 106-acre site is no longer an island, and is easily accessible from the George Washington Memorial Parkway or the Mount Vernon Bike Trail.
The Potomac River Sailing Association operates a variety of events and classes for sailors at the Washington Sailing Marina. Access to Daingerfield Island is from the George Washington Parkway. Access is southbound or northbound on George Washington Memorial Parkway.
Part of the Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail. You can get lunch at the snack bar, picnic outside, watch the airplanes take-off from National Airport, and watch the sailboats and windsurfers blow by. Not actually an island, the flat and mostly wooded park is the site of the first permanent Alexandria settlement; established by Simon Pearson in 1696. The park is just north of present day Old Town Alexandria.
Keep your distance from other people.
Practicing social distancing is still essential. Only go to the beach if you are able to keep 6 feet or 2 meters away from others. Follow the instructions provided by your local health authorities. If your community has asked that you remain indoors and away from others, do so. Spending a day in any crowded place is the worst thing we can do for our most vulnerable right now and will counter our efforts to curb the virus’s spread.
